Mighty No. 9 Delayed Again

3rd Delay’s A Charm For Mighty No. 9?

When Mighty No. 9 was delayed the first time, most fans forgave the change and were content to wait until it was ready. When it was delayed a second time, the frustration began to build, but many people were willing to give the benefit of the doubt to a developer with a solid track record.

What about when a game’s release date is changed a 3rd time? Not only has Mighty No. 9 been delayed AGAIN, but now it’s February 9th release date has been changed to “Spring 2016.”

Ouch.

In a post on their kickstarter page, the game’s creator, Keiji Inafune, posted an explanation and apology to fans. He sites problems with matchmaking as the major reason for the delay. The issue is “rooted in bugs inside the network modes,” and “the solution for each platform is slightly different.” Additionally, Inafune states that “the engine we are using is no longer being updated,” which leaves his team the tedious task of making adjustments manually.

But… I wanted to play this…

To his credit, Inafune takes complete responsibility for this additional delay:

“Unfortunately, this is all a result of miscalculations on the part of us, the development staff. As a result, our fans who have been looking forward to Mighty No. 9 have been forced to wait for over half a year longer than expected, and for that we are sincerely sorry. I want to take this chance to apologize personally, and on the behalf of the development staff.”

“For this 3rd delay of the game, we have no excuses for disappointing our fans and especially our backers once more. We want to take this chance to express our sincerest apologies to everyone who has looked forward to the release.”

See you in “Spring 2016”

Most of us can empathize with the frustrations of a project that gets derailed unexpectedly, but the reality is that when a game has been pushed back as many times as Mighty No. 9, the interest level is bound to decrease. As a result, the sales numbers may not be as great as they would have been if the game had been able to hit one of its target release dates.

Until they are able to confirm the fixes to the network bugs, the game is now slated for a Spring 2016 release, and Inafune is hoping to have a specific release date for Mighty No. 9 as soon as possible.

  1. once upon a time i gave two shits about this game…. but I’ve been over it for quite some time. the more i see of the game, the less impressed i am with it to be honest, i think Emily Rogers (famed twitter insider) said it best regarding the visuals: “Mighty No. 9’s character designs / art direction isn’t much better than what’s found in “Sonic Boom” or “Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures.”

that really isn’t that much of an insult, because those games are fine visually, but it just emphasizes that this game just doesn’t bring anything new or fresh to the table. and it certainly doesn’t seem like a game that warrants three delays that ultimately add up to almost a year in aggregate. Plus we keep hearing that the delays are tied to network and online features…. if that is the case, release the game and bring that functionality via patch later. i would bet my bottom dollar that the vast VAST majority of people that will be getting this game are more interested in the single player campaign/experience. to delay for what is most likely a feature that most users wont utilize seems like a bunch of horseshit to me.

    1. It’s just reality that when a game keeps getting pushed back and pushed back, the excitement level is going to fade. Eventually people are just annoyed when they hear about it. The sentiment becomes, “Either release it or cancel it, but please stop talking about it.”
I still hope this game is good… but I hope the next time we hear about it includes the phrase “now available.”
